insidious and saw opening

Insidious:

The lighting throughout the scene is low key this is typical of a horror genre as it is scary and creates suspense for the audience. This is used from the begging to the end to build tension making the scene seem more thrilling for the audience, possibly encouraging people to watch on.

The use of props is also important in the sequence. The most significant is the still image of the family this is significant as it’s the first time we see the character and makes the audience want to see the relation between the family and the boy.

The text is also very relevant to the genre, the text is red and has a shadow effect. This relates to the horror theme as the red often symbolises the blood and death aspect of this sort of genre. This will allow the audience to relate to the genre of the film.

Also in terms of cinematography many of the shots are close ups or establishing shots. These are always in black and white and the text comes across infront of the still shot. Also some of the shots have slight movements like a light fixture or chair. This makes the audinece predict something is there possibly a ghost.

The sound is also relevant ot the horror format, it is a high pitch, string muscial score, which builds suspence and tension for the audience, this is continous until the main titles appears, when the music suddenly cuts.

Editing is also effective, the cuts are quick and many of the shots are short duration again creating tension and suspense for the audience. This makes the sequence feel quick and flowing linking to the theme of horror.

Saw:

The sequence follows the typical conventions of an opening sequence, starting with the distribution and production titles. This generates recognistion for the audience, also the logos use a lot of editing to help make them more recognisable and unique

The title is also bold and stands out from the background, the title also ripels away which links to the next scene we see of a water ripels in a bath. This link is clever as it makes the scene flow into the next shot.

The lighting is also low key through out the sequence again linking to the horror acpect, reinforced by the previous opeining for insidious. the low key lighting allows the directors to build tension and again draw the audience into the film.

There are also many short duration shots all connected by quick cuts. Again making the sequence flow and make sense. the quick flow of the shots also builds tension and again draws the audience into the film and what is going on.

Through out the sequence there is a lack of non digetic sound this is also the case in insidious. The only sound we hear in this sequence is the digetic talking this makes the character look isolated and alone, making the audinece ask questions.
