Possible soundtrack

Load soundtrack created here:

For our opening sequence we have created a soundtrack using the music creator, Garage Band. we chose to use this soundtrack as it relates well to the horror genre our opening is based on. In the music we used a lot of effects and strings to create tension and also to make whats on screen spooky and scary. once the film is made we will fine tune this and change the tempo to fit in with what happens online.

we based the music around the soundtrack for the opening of Insidious and time Splitter:

we based it around this as it follows the typical conventions of a horror film and is spooky and scary which is what we want to achieve in our opening.

This is  another example with a slightly higher tempo this again fits the horror conventions and would relate well to our opening sequence.

Once the opening has been made we will add these sound effects to make sounds hyperbolical and stand out. Sound Effects:

This is a sound effect we want to use in our opening sequence, it will be used when the dice are rolled and will be hyperbolic to exaggerate the main theme of the opening sequence.

Here is another sound effect we want to use in our opening sequence. This is a windy, eery soundtrack which is spooky and relates well to the horror genre. This also will be made hyperbolic to make it stand out from the soundtrack.

shot list

shot list:
These shots are the four most important frames which we think will summaries our opening scene most effectively. The first shot is the main image and basiss we have set the whole story around, the story is based around a game and the dice are the most significant object in this relation. Additionally we have a frame of the titles appearing in time with the ripples of the water, this relates to one of the punishments featured in the game. Finally the frame with a show in shows that the main characters are female also highlighted in the 3rd image.

conventions of a Horror

Make your own photo slideshow at Animoto.

Mise En scene:

Horror genres often use low key lighting to reinforce the scary, empty atmosphere. This is seen in insidious where all the shots are in dark settings:

Additionally in terms of Mise en scene the loaction is often abandoned and are shown in a typical location such as a house or other public building.

The  crops used are also significant commonly they use knifes or other weapons like this, they never use guns

characters:

The victims are often female however there is always one survivor and occasionally one of the victims are children. The villain is often a murderer and has a ghostly, spirit.

editing:

The shots are often long duration and the directors used quick paced editing often cuts. occasionally the shots are also black and white to add to the effect and scariness of the scene.

cinematography:

The shots used are often extreme close ups or close ups. there are the occasional long shots which can also be used to show a establishing shot. The shots are also tilted again to build suspense and tension.

Sound:

The sound is also fast paced and again builds up tension. However some horrors don't have an sound in the opening sequence to create isolation and loneliness.

plot:

The plot of a horror genre commonly involves someone dying, but as the audience we don't know why they where killed and the events leading to the deaths. Additionally there are chase scenes and strange sounds

insidious and saw opening

Insidious:

split a gif

The lighting throughout the scene is low key this is typical of a horror genre as it is scary and creates suspense for the audience. This is used from the begging to the end to build tension making the scene seem more thrilling for the audience, possibly encouraging people to watch on.

The use of props is also important in the sequence. The most significant is the still image of the family this is significant as it’s the first time we see the character and makes the audience want to see the relation between the family and the boy.

The text is also very relevant to the genre, the text is red and has a shadow effect. This relates to the horror theme as the red often symbolises the blood and death aspect of this sort of genre. This will allow the audience to relate to the genre of the film.

Also in terms of cinematography many of the shots are close ups or establishing shots. These are always in black and white and the text comes across infront of the still shot. Also some of the shots have slight movements like a light fixture or chair. This makes the audinece predict something is there possibly a ghost.

The sound is also relevant ot the horror format, it is a high pitch, string muscial score, which builds suspence and tension for the audience, this is continous until the main titles appears, when the music suddenly cuts.

Editing is also effective, the cuts are quick and many of the shots are short duration again creating tension and suspense for the audience. This makes the sequence feel quick and flowing linking to the theme of horror.

Saw:

The sequence follows the typical conventions of an opening sequence, starting with the distribution and production titles. This generates recognistion for the audience, also the logos use a lot of editing to help make them more recognisable and unique

The title is also bold and stands out from the background, the title also ripels away which links to the next scene we see of a water ripels in a bath. This link is clever as it makes the scene flow into the next shot.

The lighting is also low key through out the sequence again linking to the horror acpect, reinforced by the previous opeining for insidious. the low key lighting allows the directors to build tension and again draw the audience into the film.

There are also many short duration shots all connected by quick cuts. Again making the sequence flow and make sense. the quick flow of the shots also builds tension and again draws the audience into the film and what is going on.

Through out the sequence there is a lack of non digetic sound this is also the case in insidious. The only sound we hear in this sequence is the digetic talking this makes the character look isolated and alone, making the audinece ask questions.

opening sequence titles

Here is the typical conventions of the action adventure film, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. This follows the typical conventions as the distributor name followed by the production company name appears first. following these are the cast with the most to least important. whilst finally these the crew listed from the least to most important.

I also compared the typical conventions to the action adventure, sixth sense. this again followed the typical conventions of the opening sequence.

I additionally looked at the typical conventions and order of the titles of the opening sequence, Scott Pilgrim vs The World. This also followed the typical conventions of the typical opening sequence.

I finally looked at the opening of the Hulk. this again follows the typical conventions of the opening sequence again appearing in the correct order, most to least cast, and least to most important crew members.

Romantic comedy

Bridget Jones diary

Sound
Firstly the sequence has very little digetic sound, this was used to reinforce to the audience the sense of loneliness and isolation. Additionally the soundtrack changes from non digetic to digetic once she starts to mime to the song. This is effective in making the character seem more cheerful as she sings to the song, making her look more positive about the time of year. Another sound affect the directors used was to make the character speak directly to the camera at the begging of the sequence. This told the audience she didn't have anyone to talk to and again reinforces her loneliness and isolation

Mise en scene

The character is dressed in red the directors chose to use this costume to again reinforce the Christmas session, a time you should be with someone. This makes the audience feel sorry for the character as she does not have anyone to celebrate Christmas with. Also the fact the costume are pyjamas also suggests the character is depressed and lonely.

Another prop used to add to the effect and emphasis the jolly christmas session was a christmas hat. This is significant as the crumpled, destroyed hat could show who we and the characters feel when christmas is over. Also the location of the hat again reinforces the characters lonely feelings.

Additionally the lighting throughout the sequence is low key, this again reinforces the loneliness and emptiness the character is feeling and therefore makes the audience feel sorry for her and wants to watch on to see what happens.

Titles

The titles are also unprofessional and look as if they are hand written, this links to the title as it might symbolise the 'diary.' This might make the story look as if it is written in her view. Additionally these titles are always at the bottom left and are always a light yellow, which don't always stand out.

Editing

This sequence uses a lot of cross dissolves. These are used to show time moving by and shows the character in a different position each time. This reinforces to the audience how lonely she is, it does this through showing shot duration shots which fade into the next, rather than one long duration showing less detail.

As well as the quick cuts and cross fades, the director also used long duration shots to add tot eh effect of loneliness. These sort of shots show time moving slowly again reinforcing her feelings. This makes the audience feel as if time is moving slowly and wants to watch on to see what happens.

Cinematography

The camera was used at the begging of the sequence to follow the character. It highlighted the main character and showed she was isolated and lonely, highlighted by the fact she was talking to herself. This camera work showed the audience the characters background making them feel lonely for her.

The camera also was used to show this establishing shot. this gives a brief view of the area, allowing the audience to guess the location. Additionally this establishing shot tilts upwards to reveal more about the place.

As well as an exterior shot of the building there is also a interior establishing shot. This shows the audience the view from inside the room, and again reinforces the point the character is lonely.

Wallander

Wallander
Firewall, 7th December 2008, BBC 1

All the way through the opening sequence there are many parts which make the audience ask questions, as well as gain clues.

An example of this is the first shot, the audience could ask, why are we here? or whats happened here?

Another example of where the audience are made to ask questions is here where there are two characters walking away from the car. this could make us ask what the relation is between them, or why are walking away, and what are they walking away from.

Sound

The first sound we hear is of a windy, eery soundtrack, this might of been used to add to the emptiness location of the scene as well as to create create tension. The sound of the wind is then exaggerated as we get closer to the car, this reinforces the situation and makes the audience question what has happened. This soundtrack is then suddenly broken when we hear a sort of knife slicing, this is a foreshadow. when sound then suddenly stops it destroys all the tension and surprises the audience.

Additionally the use of digetic sound adds to the eery atmosphere. An example is the cars communication radio. This is significant as it reinforces the remote location of the crime and shows that all the communication was lost when the attack happened.

Editing

There are many different techniques used but a common one was a quick cut. This was particularly used when it was cutting between the taxi drivers different possessions. The cuts where used to show to the audience more information about what happened to the taxi driver, and show some aspects of his personal life. The cuts are also quick and uncover short duration shots, this again reinforces to the audience the possible quick attach to the character.

As well as uncovering different objects of the taxi driver, it also cuts to the two girls walking away from the car. This was used to show a link between them and the crime, but as the audience we are still asking questions about what happened and the girls part in that scene.

Cinematography

The first shot we see is a helicopter track, this was used to give a high angle look at the scene, additionally the track draws the audience into the scene and makes us want to watch on. Also this camera use is effective as it gives a large scale view of the area
reinforcing the empty, wilderness atmosphere, where some people would not expect a crime to happen.

Another camera angle used was this long shot, it was taken from inside the taxi, this links the two characters to the taxi, which when the audience watch on shows the taxi driver murdered. Therefore this shot instantly links the characters to the crime scene, making the audience want to find out why and what actually happened.

Also the directors used an establishing shot to show where the scene happened. This again is reinforcing the sound and showing an empty, wilderness location, not somewhere you would expect a crime to happen.

Mise- En- Scene

A prop the character used was a razor blade, seen hanging around her neck, this show that she is a violent, aggressive person. Again reinforcing to the audience they are probably the ones responsible for the murder of the taxi driver.
Additionally the Taxi in the background is clean and white, this colour often symbolises peace, this is then contrasted to the black clothing of the two girls, possibly suggesting they are the murders and again making the audience predict who is responsible for the murder.

Also the character has red in her hair, this again reinforces she is an aggressive character as the colour often represents blood and death, instantly making the audience link the character to the crime in the taxi.

Preliminary Exercise Shannon Molly Jack

WWW:
We produced a good video using continuity editing, we used a match on action shot to show Shannon walking through the door, we first see it getting opened from the outside of the room and then instantly from inside. we always followed the 180 degree rule as shannon was always on the left while Molly was always on the right, this therefore dose not confuss the audience. Finally we also used shot reverse shot, this is seen when the two characters are having a conversation. Also as well as these we used other techniques such as low and high angle shots and a eye-line match.

EBI:
Some of the shots are unsteady, for example the low angle shot, also there ares one things in the background that could be removed, such as the camera bag which was there in two shots. the shot where Shannon stands up, there is a lot of background space while to the two characters are in the bottom left.
